Learning Gems: A Metacognitive Approach to Learning

The Learning Gem Project is a teaching and learning approach that promotes metacognition, encouraging children to reflect on their learning processes. It helps them recognize and actively practice the skills required for success. “Gem Powers” are integrated into every classroom, guiding students in understanding which skills are essential for different learning tasks. By fostering self-awareness as learners, we support children in developing and refining the skills they need to grow. Through this approach, they learn how to apply different Gem Powers and determine which ones are best suited for various tasks.

Created by scientist and educationalist Tom Robson (www.tredu.co.uk), The Gem Project is founded on the principle that “practice makes permanent.” The ability to reflect on one’s own learning—known as metacognition—is now recognized as a key factor in building resilience and achieving success. This project provides children with the tools to develop these essential skills.

Using Gem Powers at Fonthill

By providing a clear framework for successful learning, we can engage children in meaningful discussions about the specific attributes that contribute to high-quality learning experiences. At our school, children earn gems by demonstrating and developing positive learning behaviours. These gems are placed in a collective class pot, reinforcing the idea of teamwork and shared progress.

Teachers regularly review the learning behaviours displayed, recognizing strengths and identifying areas for growth. Once a class pot is full, the achievement is celebrated as a collective success with an extra break time. Each day, teachers identify a Power Gem. This is then a focus for the day, and one child will receive a Power Gem card at the end of the day. If a child earns 3 Power Gems in a term, they are rewarded with an activity with the headteachers.

Using Gem Powers at Home

Here are some ways you can encourage and develop Gem Powers at home:

  • Diamond Power: Encouraging independence and responsibility, such as picking up items instead of stepping over them, cutting up their own food, or tidying their room without being asked.

  • Sapphire Power: Helping children focus on one task at a time, like completing homework or finishing a chore before moving on to something else.

  • Emerald Power: Teaching resilience by managing disappointment—whether it's not getting something they want or being asked to do an unenjoyable task—without reacting negatively.

  • Ruby Power: Promoting kindness by supporting siblings and showing empathy through small, thoughtful actions.

  • Topaz Power: Encouraging meaningful conversations by allowing children to express their opinions, ask thoughtful questions, and show genuine interest in others.

  • Pearl Power: Helping children connect their learning experiences by discussing school topics at home and making links between new and familiar concepts.

  • Amethyst Power: Developing teamwork skills through turn-taking, problem-solving together, and offering support to others.

  • Grit Power: Building perseverance by encouraging children to keep practising skills even when they find them difficult—whether in reading, sports, or learning a musical instrument.

By using these powers at home, children can strengthen essential life skills that will support their learning and personal growth!
