Why Pupil Leadership Matters at Fonthill

At Fonthill, we believe that every child is a leader in the making. Giving pupils meaningful opportunities to take responsibility, contribute to school life, and influence positive change is a vital part of their personal development. Pupil leadership not only strengthens our school community, but also prepares children for their futures — in education, in the workplace, and as active citizens.

Promoting British Values Through Leadership

Our pupil leadership roles help children live out the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance.
Through roles such as School Council and Pupil Ambassadors, children learn how to share ideas respectfully, listen to others, make decisions as a group, and represent the views of their peers. These experiences build confidence, responsibility, and an understanding of how communities work — skills they will carry into later life.

Developing Skills for Future Careers and Life

Leadership in primary school lays the foundation for future success. When children take on roles where they must problem‑solve, communicate, organise, and work as part of a team, they are practising the very skills employers value — teamwork, initiative, reliability, confidence and creativity. They learn how to contribute, how to collaborate, and how to see themselves as capable individuals with something important to offer.

Our pupil leadership opportunities help children to:

  • speak confidently in front of others
  • manage responsibilities
  • work collaboratively
  • show initiative
  • develop resilience and independence
  • understand their role within a wider community

These are skills that will benefit them in secondary school, in the workplace, and far beyond.

Our Pupil Leadership Roles

We are proud to offer a range of leadership opportunities so every child can find a role that plays to their strengths, interests and passions:

Librarians - Help run the school library, support reading for pleasure and promote a love of books across the school.

School Council - Elected by their peers, our school council members represent pupil voice, gather ideas from across the school, and help share whole school improvements.

Pupil Ambassadors - Welcome visitors, model our school values, help younger pupils and act as role models across the school day.

Eco Team - Take the lead on sustainability, helping us look after our environment and encourage the whole school to think and act responsibly.

Sports Coaches - Support active play, help lead games on the playground and promote health, active lifestyles for all pupils.
