Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

We are committed to ensuring our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education reflects and meets the diverse needs and backgrounds of our school community and is designed to ensure the children are taught the knowledge and life skills to become resilient, caring and respectful members of a diverse society and to prepare them for the complexities of modern life.

We are committed to the health, well-being and holistic development of our children and in creating a school environment where members feel safe, valued and respected. We believe in providing our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities to enable them to contribute to society. We explore their own unique identities and their place in the world whilst learning to respect and celebrate different cultures and individuals within own school, our local community and the wider world.  We believe the knowledge and attributes learnt through our PSHE curriculum underpin our school vision and play an important role in improving attainment across all areas of learning.

The PSHE curriculum also includes the teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) which is a statutory element to enable children to develop safe and healthy relationships throughout their lives and to understand the importance not just of physical but also mental health and emotional well-being. At Fonthill, we encourage children to express their emotions appropriately, to have respect and to develop empathy for others.

To ensure progression across the Foundation and Primary age and to build upon the knowledge and skills taught previously, we use Jigsaw as our chosen teaching and learning programme as it is a comprehensive, spiral curriculum with a mindful approach to PSHE. We tailor this scheme of work to meet our children’s needs and supplement with additional learning if and when we feel necessary to ensure our curriculum not only meets the statutory requirements and guidance from the Department for Education but that it is relevant and meaningful to the needs of our school community.
