Oracy (Talking Topaz)
We place a strong emphasis on oracy. We believe that the ability to speak clearly, confidently and thoughtfully is central to success across the curriculum and beyond.
Oracy is woven throughout daily school life. Children are explicitly taught how to communicate effectively and are given regular opportunities to practise and refine their speaking and listening skills in a purposeful way.
We expect pupils to:
- stand to speak, showing respect for the speaker and audience
- speak in full sentences, developing clarity and precision
- use sentence steps to structure their ideas
- apply ambitious vocabulary, supported through explicit vocabulary instruction across all CUSP lessons
Through this consistent approach, children develop confidence in expressing their ideas, explaining their thinking and engaging in meaningful discussion.
Oracy is also recognised and celebrated through our Topaz learning gem, which is awarded to pupils who demonstrate excellence in speaking and listening. This helps to promote high expectations and ensures that strong communication is valued across the school.
We further enrich our oracy offer through opportunities such as the Trust “Speak Up” event in Years 5 and 6. Pupils write and perform their own speeches, developing confidence, creativity and a sense of audience, while sharing their views on important issues.
Through our focus on oracy, we aim to develop articulate, confident and respectful communicators who are able to share their ideas, listen to others and contribute positively to their community.
