Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Fonthill Primary Academy, we place a strong emphasis on mental health and wellbeing. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, supported and valued, and we are committed to creating an environment where every child can thrive.

Our approach is built on a graduated response, ensuring that all children receive the right level of support at the right time. This begins with high-quality universal provision for all pupils, alongside targeted and specialist support where needed.

Our Aim

Through our graduated approach, we aim to:

  • support children to understand and manage their emotions
  • build resilience, confidence and positive relationships
  • ensure that every child feels listened to, valued and supported

In line with our mission to Belong, Believe, Explore and Achieve, we want all children to feel that they belong to a safe and caring community, believe in themselves, and are ready to navigate the challenges of both school and life beyond.

Universal Support for All

We ensure that every child has access to support through:

  • trusted adults in school, who build strong relationships and are available to listen and respond
  • class-based systems, such as worry or chat boxes, where children can share concerns in a safe and private way
  • a responsive PSHE curriculum, which supports children to understand their emotions, build resilience and develop positive relationships
  • learning gems to support with emotional regulation (Emerald Power), being good citizens (Opal Power), kindness and respect (Ruby Power) and solving problems (Diamond Power).

Our OPAL playtimes also play a key role in supporting wellbeing. Children benefit from rich, active play opportunities, supported by trained O-Pals (pupil leaders) who help promote inclusive play, build friendships and support others during unstructured times.

Targeted Support

For children who need additional support, we provide targeted interventions, including:

  • ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) sessions
  • Drawing and Talking therapy, supporting children to process emotions and experiences

These programmes are carefully planned to meet individual needs and help children develop strategies to support their emotional wellbeing.

Specialist Support

Where needed, we work closely with a range of external agencies to ensure that children and families receive the right support beyond the school. This allows us to respond effectively to more complex needs and provide joined-up care.
