Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning is a valued and integral part of school life. We believe that learning beyond the classroom supports children’s physical, social and emotional development, while creating meaningful and memorable experiences.

Rooted in our mission to Belong, Believe, Explore and Achieve, outdoor learning gives every child the opportunity to be active, take risks, build resilience and develop confidence in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Our outdoor offer brings together:

  • Physical Education (PE), where pupils develop fitness, teamwork and confidence
  • OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), which provides rich opportunities for creative, independent and collaborative play
  • Forest School, where children explore the natural environment, develop practical skills and build a connection with nature

Through these experiences, pupils learn to work together, solve problems and take responsibility for themselves and others. Outdoor learning also supports wellbeing, helping children to develop positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.

We place a strong emphasis on giving children real-life, hands-on experiences. Whether through active play, sport or exploration of the natural world, outdoor learning encourages curiosity, independence and a love of being active and outdoors.

Our aim is for all children to leave Fonthill as confident, resilient and healthy individuals, with the skills and mindset to enjoy an active lifestyle and engage positively with the world around them.
